The Quansheng UV-K5(8) is a relatively low cost dual-band handheld amateur radio (VHF/UHF) known for its extensive features, broad receiving capabilities thanks to many clever firmware updates which amateurs around the world have written and made freely available.
Do you have one of these and programmed it with new firmware to extend its operating frequencies, added spectrum scope etc? Or are you interested in doing so?
UPDATE
I am delighted that following my mention on NARC Live and a newsletter 9 people have expressed an interest in sharing ideas, so we will be having an informal workshop this Wednesday 14th January at our CNS meeting from 19.45. Please do bring your charged laptops and UV-K5(8) radios and we can all compare notes and experiences.
The idea for this informal workshop came to me as I bought one just before Christmas but struggled to get Chirp to work with this radio with my Mac, but I figured there would be others who are not sure either and surely this is something ideal for a club activity – I hoped I would not be alone and look forward to Wednesday!
As well as lots of curious people just getting started I hope there will be a few experts come who have lots of experience to share! One tip one member has already shared is be careful with some versions of firmware that they do not ‘brick’ your radio and that its always wise to take an ‘image’ of your new radios firmware as supplied and store it safely on your computer before trying new firmware!

PS: I bought mine from Moonraker for £19.95 plus £4.95 for a programming cable as they offered next day delivery and Moonraker’s radios come with a UK plug charger
