I was short of students this week. Tony is away for two weeks so I have suggested some practice routines he should adopt in his attempt at catching up. He does have quite a way to go to do that so I hope you put plenty of time in Tony. James did not show this week. He was also lagging behind quite a lot. I hope you Persevere James, it is one of the Big P words!

Both Emma and Nick are progressing nicely and obviously are doing their practice. I was very pleased to see that, so they both received a reward for their efforts.

So to avoid them becoming bored and impatient I gave them some real brain strain last evening. I increased the overall speed by reducing the Farnsworth. This has the effects of 1 Pushing their limits and 2 Prevent PONDERING. This is a Big P word that we DON’T want and it does take some effort to overcome.

We also started on some QSO format passages. This is like being on the air and copying what is being sent using abbreviations. You will have to master those because Morse Code language is full of abbreviations and they should be read just the same as the word they represent. I shall be doing more of those in future so please start getting familiar with them. I have sent you a list which I hope you have saved?

Please do not forget that. It is non-productive. If you did not copy instantaneously, it shows a lack of Practice.

I am assuming that at this stage your decoding of letters is not in question. If it is, you MUST commit all the characters of the alphabet to memory so that you have instant recognition. There are difficult ones and you will know which ones give you a problem, probably VWXYZ for a start. They are the least used but must be remembered just the same as AEIT etc.

I suggested as homework with plain language that you should look at the RSGB web site and go to the NEWS. It is available in CW at speeds of 5 wpm upwards. Sit down for 30 minutes or so and do some copying of this, at a speed that you can get around 80% solid copy. This will show which are your problem characters so you can construct some groups with these and do extra practice.

I did say that ALL the hard work is done by YOU when learning Morse, so please stick with it and do as much Big P as you can in order that you don’t drop behind. Try and copy some of the Monday night net. It might be too fast but listening to Morse that is too fast for you is the only way to progress.

Here is the information on the Monday NARC CW net. We would like to see more people join who need the netting and net practice. It is very good local practice and we don’t bite! I say this every week, but one of these weeks we will get a shock and see somebody new join in!
