This Monday sees our first radio direction finding ‘foxhunt’ competition of the year where team Tornado (last years winners) will hide up somewhere in Norfolk and transmit radio messages on 2m for 1 minute every 5 minutes. The hunters have to find them using direction finding receivers (some home made and some commercial) and the winning team is the one who finds them in the shortest car mileage!
It really is great fun and if you would like to find out more the best way is to come to Thorpe Recreation Ground at Laundry Lane, Norwich, NR7 0XQ on Monday from 1845 or so to see teams setting up and testing their gear before they take their bearings on the first transmission at 19.30. And this is a friendly foxhunt, one that is not too difficult so that newcomers can see what its all about and for established teams to try out their equipment.
We have a few basic rules for safety, the main ones being there must be minimum of 2 people per team in each car with at least one person who is a NARC member, has a charged mobile phone and the car needs to have a milometer which ideally shows 0.1 mile increments in case its a close finish.
Hope to see some new faces there!
