Operation Manna and Operation Chowhound were important humanitarian food drops to relieve the famine in Holland behind Nazi lines late in World War two. 20,000 people had died from starvation and 980,000 were malnourished. Many had survived by eating pets and spoiled food. Some even eating tulip bulbs leading to poisoning.
This year commemorates 80 years since these momentous operations and several groups of radio amateurs around the world will be marking this with special event stations and awards, including 100th Bomb Group Memorial Museum at Dickleburgh near Diss in Norfolk. In addition to Britain there are expected to be special event stations in Holland, Canada, United States, Poland and Australia.
Norfolk Amateur Radio Club will be running a Special Event station GB80CHO from this museum on Saturday 26th April 2025 between the hours of 1000-1600 and Sunday 27th April 2025 between 1000-1500 (to fit in with the opening times of the museum).
We hope to operate on a range of bands and modes over the weekend and welcome NARC members and other local amateurs to come and help us man this special event both to operate and interact with visitors to the museum.
If you are a member or local radio amateur and would like to help us with the special event station. please contact David G7URP – my email address is radio@dcpmicro.com
