Contesting can be great fun but I know there’s a reluctance to step into unknown waters. It’s a great way of improving many aspects of our hobby including one’s own performance and the quality of your station. If you have any interest whatsoever please call in to the contest net on Friday evening at 9pm on 145.250MHz FM or speak to any of the regular contesters on 450. Or indeed email me!

Results:-
On VHF
Several new VHF results of note this week.
On 7th August the results of the 70MHz Trophy test of 18th July were released. In the single operator fixed section G4LPP was second and G4AFF was 3rd. In the Non-UK Fixed section Roger EI8KN was the only entry. NARC di dot enter a portable station in this one. Link here to results
On 10th August the results of the 1.3GHz UKAC of 21st July were released. In the Open section G4AFF was 6th and G4LPP was 7th. In the Low power section G3SGC was 24th. Link here to results
On 10th August the results of the VHF fixed station contest of 4th/5th July were released. This contest ran for 24h and covered 6m to 1.3 GHz. In the Open section G4LPP was 3rd. In the Open section Non-UK Roger EI8KN was 3rd. In the Restricted section Terry G0BIX was 24th. Link here to results – they are also broken down by band here –
The results of VHF NFD (4th/5th July)came out on 13th August. There was no NARC team involved as such but the Bittern DX group who have NARC members managed 3rd place overall in the ‘Mix and Match’ section. Link here to those results
The results of the 144MHz UKAC of 4th August were released (rapidly) on 11th August. We managed 8 entries in this one which is excellent. In the Open section Stewart G4AFF was 7th, Phil G4LPP was 9th, Steve M5BFL was 12th and Roger EI8KN was 20th. In the Restricted section Neil G4HUN/P was 32nd (and our 2nd highest points scorer), Graham G3SGC was 60th, John G8VPE was 100th and Mike G4DYC was 126th. In the overall UKAC we are currently 5th, but a long way behind Wirral in 4th. Interestingly Parallel lines group have a perfect 6000 score so far! Link here
On HF
No new relevant HF results of which I am aware. Of note, we are still awaiting the overall result of the 80m Club Championships with the final DATA result outstanding.

On VHF
On Tuesday 11th August the 432MHz UKAC ran. Conditions from Norfolk to the North through East to South East were slightly elevated and contacts into GM, SM, OZ and deep into DL were made. We had a good turn out of entries with 8 entries from NARC (G4AFF, G4LPP, G3SGC, EI8KN, G4HUN/P, G8VPE, G4DYC and G4KQY) and good activity with 139 logs received at RSGBCC. Link here to logs received
On Wednesday 12th August the 432MHz FT8 AC ran (2h and 4h sections). NARC stations in evidence were EI8KN and G0BIX. Link here to claimed scores, 2h section
On Thursday 13th August the 50MHz UKAC ran. NARC members turned out well for this one with 8 on the air. In no particular order, they were Mike G4KQY, Andy M0NKR, Roger G3LDI, Jim G3YLA, Stewart G4AFF, John G8VPE, Roger EI8KN and myself. Inter G conditions seemed poor until about 30mins before the end of the contest although with difficulty a few could be worked earlier. There was a brief lift due to ES propagation to Italy and Croatia which I was able to take advantage of working 3 stations. Link here to claimed scores
On HF
On Sat 8th Aug 0000 to Sun 9th Aug. 2359 WAE DX CW contest ran.

Hi Phil,
Worked All Europe, CW. With only dx stations to hit, only managed my magic number (50) in two hours 27 mins in two bites. Apart from the usual US/CAN there was India, Thailand, French Guiana, Kazakhstan, China and Aruba.

On Wednesday 12th August, timed to coincide with the Solar Eclipse, the RSGB ran 2 contests – the 80m CW from 16:30 to 19:30 and the 40m FT8 between the same times. I believe the logs are to be used to see if the Eclipse truly affects HF propagation on these bands. Activity was not great probably as people were out watching the eclipse and it was a workday. In the 80m CW test 62 logs were received at RSGBCC with a good mix of UK and overseas stations involved. NARC was represented by M0RYB/p, G3LDI, G4LPP, 2E0OBO, G3YLA, G4DYC, G0OOR and G8VPE so an excellent percentage of he received logs were from ourselves! Link here
In the 40m FT8 test 55 logs were received. I did not spot any NARC entries but link here to logs received

Before each of the 2m and 70cm UKACs there is an FM leg starting 1 hour before for 55 minutes. I hear almost no activity in this from here but others may have more luck! Rules etc on RSGBCC site.
Also of interest for some on the vhf / uhf bands are the EU FT8 activity tests – see the following link more information. These are on the first (144 MHz), second (432MHz) and third (1.3GHz) Wednesdays of each month. 1700-2000 Hrs EU FT8 series website
